BIOTOPE - Bente Skjøttgaard Jun-Aug 2020

BIOTOPE
Bente Skjøttgaard
EXHIBITION 18 June – 22 August 2020
Summer closed 25. July - 3. August
No one knows the day before the sun goes down.. in deep water.
We gladly follow Bente Skjøttgaard on her marvellous journey. Under ground, above ground on clouds of all kinds, or into deep water, where it may be difficult.

She always seems to be able to swim at ease regardless of the fascinating dangers of the journey in wild colours and shapes, disturbing materiality and dripping glaze layers - from sky phenomena to lava-like caves, from cow hooves on the ancient Danish road (Hærvejen) to car tracks at huge clay plates, - from the feather light to the dark surfaces.

We'll try keep up with the travel without knowing for sure what she will do next.
It is a pleasure to welcome the artist and the audience who dare to venture on a journey.

Bente Skjøttgaard is in the middle of an active brilliant career that does not happen exclusively in the studio, although it is clear that she is there often.
She exhibits all over the world, is the initiator and co-owner of Copenhagen Ceramics, has been a visiting teacher at the Kolding School of Design, taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Design, former Chair of the National Arts Foundation's Grants Committee on Crafts and Design, Jury member at the Biennale Internationale de Vallauris 2014, France, and early on a guest artist at the Bing & Grondahl and Royal Copenhagen Porcelain.
She manages to maintain her initiative, drive and ability to always develop new works, which appear from extensive research on the subject that quite current has come within her sphere of interest.
Often these are phenomena related to nature, science, and always with the infinite possibilities of the material in focus.

ALL SOLID MELTS INTO AIR
Exhibition 13.6-2.8 2020 Art Warehouse, Ikast, DK
Bente Skjøttgaard & Anne Damgaard
Bente Skjøttgaard challenges the weight of the clay to create organic formations and structures in the pursuit of the weightless. She works systematically on the premises of the ceramic material, but balances on the limit of the possible, and the studies develop into memories of amorphous natural abstractions, with thick layers of glaze. In recent years, Bente Skjøttgaard, inspired by cloud formations in the sky, has worked to lift the weight of the clay and give it movement, by examining the variability and airy volume of the clouds.

CUMULUS
Bente Skjøttgaard's interest in the 'higher spheres' began at her first visit to South Korea in 2008. Soon after, her first clouds were born, sort of growths where interlaced columbine structures rise above very fine 'trunks' with reference to the country's ceramic tradition.
”It is a play with forms and colour, variations of something as contradictory as making airy and light clouds in the heavy clay. The pink colour is the colour that clouds get after the sun has set. A kind of reflection. The level lines appear as those of the horizon. I like when the wildly grown organic - that has no specific form and in reality could continue infinitely - are cut through by straight sharp lines."

About clouds...
Cumulus clouds are a type of cloud with noticeable vertical development and clearly defined edges. Cumulus means "heap" or "pile" in Latin. They are often described as "puffy" or "cotton-like" in appearance. Cumulus clouds may appear alone, in lines, or in clusters.
Cumulus clouds are often precursors of other types of clouds, such as cumulonimbus, when influenced by weather factors such as instability, moisture, and temperature gradient.
Cumulus clouds are part of the larger family of cumuli-form clouds, which include cumulus, cumulus congestus, and cumulonimbus clouds, among others.
The most intense cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds may be associated with severe weather phenomena such as hail, waterspouts and tornadoes.
Cumulus humilis clouds, appearing as small- or medium-sized puffy shapes in the sky, often occur in times of fair weather.
However, cumulus clouds can grow into cumulonimbus clouds which may produce heavy rain, lightning, severe and strong winds, hail, and even tornadoes.
Cumulus congestus clouds, which appear as towers, will often grow into cumulonimbus storm clouds.
